Photographer's Note
The report last week on Dutch Television about the clear out of the last Berlin squat Lieblig 34, made me decide to post this series about another building with alternative housing in Berlin with priority.
Tommy Weissbecker House
Self-Managed Collective Housing
Wilhelmstraίe 9 - Kreuzberg, Berlin
Since 1973, the Tommy-Weisbecker-Haus has existed as a residential collective alternative housing where adolescent and young adults have the opportunity to live in a self-organized way.
"Trebegδnger" - young people who have run away from home - are also welcome. Social workers are available to assist residents if necessary.
Since 1990 there is in the house the well-known cafι "Linie 1", where concerts are often organized. Famous bands like Rage Against The Machine and Chumbawamba already played there.
In addition, the hemp museum has been located in the Tommy-Weisbecker-Haus since 1994.
Photo 1 shows a detail of the mural on the front-faηade.
Photo 2 shows the entire front-faηade with the entrance to the Tommy Weissbecker House and the entrance to cafι "Linie 1"
Photo 3 shows the rich decorated mural on the left side faηade.

hello Rob,
This building was painted from all side with vivid scenes and colors.
Quite amazing to distinct from the real view to the painted objects, some has a 3D effect.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob,
It's an amazing building and three very inspiring photos. The main photo is well cropped to include just a slice of each surrounding bay window. I had to look carefully to see that two banners are actually real, and not extremely cleverly painted.
The building brings back memories of the "alternative" movements and urban warfare of the 1970's, including the RAF. I didn't know Tommy Weisbecker but found that he must have been described as a left wing terrorist (killed by the rather ruthless police force of West Germany in those days). It's slightly strange that he is still remembered this way. Where is the Andreas Baader house? ;-)
Best regards,
Gert

Goedenavond Rob,
De gevel schilders worden steeds creatiever.
Maar er was ook een fotograaf die dit werk heeft gevonden.
U maakte er een mooie foto van, maar gaf ons ook de kans om mee te genieten van uw foto werk.
Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.
Prettige avond gewenst,
John.

Hi Rob,
A very special wall which has many original details in addition to the big mural. Banner with Ninja Turtles is quite surprising. And so is that window covered with aluminum foil.

Hello Rob, I am so pleased that you shared the picture of the entire front facade which enabled me to fully understand your main post.
Three excellent pictures that show the excellent artwork that has made this building unique in its appearance.
The project that you describe sounds a wonderful scheme.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Ciao Rob,Nice report of this building, a sort of social center where it is easy to find drugs and misfits. The main photo shows very well the details of the murals and also the not excellent condition of the walls. The two WS are very beautiful, especially the total view. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Rob, I do not know what it means collective housing. Anyway, the walls with the big artistic graffiti look nice. In Workshop I can read that Tonny was shot. But why? Interesting flags, at first, it seems that are the part of graffiti, not real.

Hello Rob,
I had never heard of this place but it sounds like a very useful and successful place for young adolescents.
You have shown us some excellent photographs of this remarkable building. I thought, at first that the banner was painted ... it just shows how we are affected by what we expect to see!
I like the w/s photographs, too. One shows the building in its entirety and the other, a whole plethora of interesting artwork. I wonder if there is a suggestion of possible jobs available to these people.
Thanks for sharing this,
Bev :-)

Hi Rob
Well selected detail of this facade. The mural combines nicely with the banner, it's almost hard to see which is real which is painted.
Good addition of WS photos so we can see the larger scale, as well as the other mural.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Rob,
This is an interesting subject, and I like all the art on the facade. It's good that a space like this exists, with professionals on hand to help. The foil in the top, left window is eye-catching and unusual, too. Take care!

Hallo Rob,
Vele groeten, Paul
