Rebuilding the Past

This building is one of the newest ones in Berlin and is located at Schloίplatz on the Museuminsel (Museum Island) in the city centre. When I visited the same place fifteen years ago, it was still the site of the Palast der Republik, which housed the parliament (Volkskammer) of East Germany, as you can see here: https://www.trekearth.com/viewphotos.php?l=7&p=153035.

The Palast der Republik had been abandoned for some time in 2005 and in my note I already wrote that plans had been made to rebuild the Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace), but that there was not enough money, but a couple of years later the former parliament building was demolished and in 2013 the reconstruction of the Berliner Stadtschloss began. The palace was one of the largest buildings in Berlin and was the main residence of the House of Hohenzollern from 1443 to 1918. It was badly damaged in Allied bombings during WWII and subsequently demolished in 1950 by the East German authorities. It will be completed later this year and become home of the Humboldt Forum, which will include several museums.

The sculpture in the left hand side foreground is part of the Schlossbrόcke, a bridge crossing the Spree canal.
