Photographer's Note

Amidst the agile shops and stores in the city centre of Bonn, near the birthplace of Beethoven, there's a great church with a wonderful baroque facade, This church, "Namen Jesu", ("the name of Jesus") was built 1668 - 1717 by the Jesuits residentiary in Bonn. It was "sponsored" by the archbishop of Cologne, Maximilian Heinrich of Bavaria.

It's a very special building because of it's mixture of several stylistic elements (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque). In the couse of the counter-reformation this church should document the continuity of the catholic church during the centuries.
During the occupation of the Rhineland by french revolutionary troops at the end the 18th century the church was used as a horse stable and a lodging of soldiers. It's interior decoration was demolished compeletely during this.

Today "Namen Jesu" is the catholic univerity church of the "Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universitδt" in Bonn and the church of the Italian fold of Bonn. The remarkable high altar (from 1755) - you can see it in my picture - came from the secularised former Capuchin church of Bonn which was knocked down in 1897.
