Photographer's Note
Not far away from Bonn at the eastern bank of Rhine river there's a veritable Romanesque treasure - the "double church of Schwarz-Rheindorf" (in German: "Doppelkirche Schwarz-Rheindorf") - St. Clemens. It was built 1149 - 1151 and donated by Arnold von Wied, archbishop and elector of Cologne. It has two superposed rooms, each with an altar. They are connected with each other by a big octagonal aperture which allows to look down to the altar of the lower church. Here you can find the biggest continuous cycle of Romanesque mural paintings about the Old and the New Testament in Germany.
It is supposed that the nobles watched the service in the lower church from the upper one and here a special seating, looking similar to a throne, was installed for the archbishop - perhaps even for visits of the emperor.
After the death of Arnold in 1156 his sister, Hadwig here established a monastery of Benedictine nuns and the upper room became the conclave church of the nuns.
During workings of restoration (installation of an underfloor heating) at the end of the 20th century the original tomb of Arnold of Wied was discovered.
The building of the church is towered by a mighty belfry. The coating of the whole church was adapted during the restoration to the original medieval coating.
The most impressive building is a real landmark of the right river bank of the Rhine.
My picture, taken from an perhaps unusual angle, only shows a part of the church in order to emphasize the architectural intricacies and the outstanding colours. The whole church you can see here. In the workshop you can see the belfry from another angle.
With the "map view" function at the left you can zoom exactly down (click at +) to the church.

Hallo Frank,
da hast Du uns mit Deiner Note ja schon viel gegeben. Das Bild macht genauso viel her. Der Blick nach oben mit all den Farben ist toll, wie sich Licht und Schatten abzeichnet finde ich sehr schφn. Den Farbenreichtum der Kirche hast Du gut eingefangen. Etwas stφrt das Rauschen im Himmel.

Frank,
What a unique perspective. It really adds to the effect of the church reaching towards the sky .. and creates all sorts of interesting effects with the lines and arches ..

A beautiful old church, with nice lines and colors. You were lucky that you had such a deep blue sky, that lit up the church colors even better. The shadow of the tree is very nice and makes the picture more alive. Thank you for the interesting story.

I love this unique POV you have chosen, both here and in the WS. The architectural detail is very well shown against the strong blue of the sky.
Happy New Year to you and your family.

Bonjour Frank,
Best regards and best wishes for 2007.
Daniel.

Hello Frank!
The photograph is made more endearing by the text of history you give
making the whole composition much more compelling. I studied in a Benedictine
school run by monks in my country thus making that short mention enriches
my knowledge.
May the new year bring you peace, love and joy for your whole family.

Hi Frank!
Again an old edifice from Germany - this time from a very unusual pov. The nonstandard angle of the compo makes it very dinamic - as if hurring from the past to tell us something before getting too late...
Greetings from cold but sunny Sofia!

Hi Frank - wonderful perspective, has added a pleasant geometry to the already pretty architecture, the pastel colours add a cheerful aura to the building. The ws is also nice, though I prefer the original compositionally.

crisp and powerful with that rich sky and building tones...polariser?
i think the belfrey from another angle suits the upright format..both are appealing especially for the high weather conditions
dull and rainy in england with a promise of more rain...:(
cheers

Hi Frank.
An strange POV this one which makes a lovely picture!
The colours and the sharpness are also good. Only needs, in my opinion, some clouds.
Anyway, lovely picture!

So, I was wrong about it! Really interesting because usually medieval churches looks quite... Errr... Grey or stone-colored, like most of the Cathedrals, like St Vitus or Stephansdom or Koln Cathedral.
Very interesting and educational note and, a great shot also!
