Photographer's Note
While in Berlin I loved travelling on the S + U Bahn. The mixture of the old stations and the new was very interesting. Personally I liked the old stations as opposed to the new ones such as can be found at Potsdamer Platz.
This was taken at Unter den Linden, the stop for the Brandenburg Gate. I had my camera sat on top of my camera bag to hold it still. I had it on timer and mirror lock and waited for a train to arrive. Just as the photo was to be taken the woman looked around. Perfect.
I also heard last week an interview with U2. When asked why they called themselves that they said that they didn't really know, but they thought it sounded like a German U Boat. Later they made an album, Zoo Station. Guess what? They didn't know that in Berlin the U2 line on the U Bahn stops at the zoo station (Zoologischer Garten).

Slightly late welcome to TE Mark. Just had a quick look through your first posts, and you clearly have an eye for the unusual. This one less so but a great example of the metro genre. As you say, great look from the woman, as if to say 'What the hell is he up to'.

Most of the times when the person in the picture looks at the camera and becomes conscious of being photographed, the photo loses interest... no this one, you can see her thinking about it and it just adds drama to her expression.
BTW, U2 were uncertain about their own band name, but they did know about that station: the album was recorded in Berlin and they noticed that coicidence and used it for opening-song name (not album name - the album is called Achtung Baby).

That's very interesting shot. She obviously noticed your camera and you trying to take a photo of her and that makes this shot really unique. I probably liked if the train appeared at least a half of the frame. But still I like it.

Mark: of your handful of posts thus far, this one excells for an aesthetic point of view: simple, empty spaces, and the approaching train. Just great. regards, c

Hi mark,
for me your best shot. You have the zooming train which is always a fantastic elemenet providing lots of drama and action as a great background, a dominant and interesting foreground, shot at a nice wide angle. The exposure is excellent.

Hi Mark. This is a great use of the B&W medium. Excellent POV and composition. I like how all the lines are leading in the same direction - the rails of the bench, the platform, the train etc.
Were you sat on the bench next to the woman or crouched down beside it, and did you speak to her first? I ask because I think I might have felt a bit uncomfortable pointing the camera at her - something I may have to get over as I'd like to take more shots with people in them.
cheers Leon.

Hi Mark,
a great one here. A perfect compo with this woman on the right... I like her expression.
Like Rafal mentionned, maybe one of your best image.

Hi Mark, excellent shot, great perspective! The diagonals coming from at least four directions really add to the picture, too. It's funny what you mention about U2 and Zoo Station. I think that song came out around the time I went to Germany for the first time and I just assumed that it was about Berlin (I didn't listen to it much). (Was Zooropa also related?)

Hi Mark, really glorious lines here in superb B&W enhancing them, the lady giving the human touch to the frame, actually her look made me smile! I like the train back there, not too conspicuous, otherwise it would have stolen the show here. Regards, Daniel

Hi MArk, this one is very very good!
i like a lot this theme, unfortunately i live in a town - Padua- where there isn't the underground (the reason is that there are wonderful romanesque ruins under the street)...
great the crop on the bench and the expression of the woman...
a beautiful image!
ciao!
Valeria
