Lighthouse of the Whales

The lighthouse of the whales is located on the commune of Saint-Clment-des-Baleines, with the Western point of the island of R. Many strandings of whales had place in the past, from where the name of the lighthouse. One have access at the top, 57 m, by a helicoid staircase of 257 steps. The rise is impressive, most courageous risk a glance above the rambarde, the others shave the walls.
The lighthouse, classified historic building in 1999, is worth visiting and still functions, its fire has a range of 39 kilometers.
Built since 1849, it replaced in 1854 a tower, the Tower of the Whales of 21 meters built in 1682 on the orders of Vauban and which remains in the north of the lighthouse.

Saint-Clment-des-Baleines is a french commune, located on the Island of R, department of the Charente-Maritime, Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 728 Villageois and Villageoises, distributed on 7 km, that is to say 107 hab/km.
Its name comes from the many strandings of Cetacea on its beaches until the beginning of the XXe century.
Important remainders of blockhouse of the Atlantic Wall, dating from the Second World war. Certain scenes of film "the longest day" were turned on the Northern beach.
