Photographer's Note
Alley Cats is one of the top tourist attractions of the city of Troyes.
This very narrow alley gives an idea of medieval streets paved with a central channel for the flow of water. Rebuilt after the great fire of 1524, the houses expand in height, floors and overflow into the streets to increase their surface, the tax was calculated on the floor area. This street is named after the fact that a cat can indeed move from side to side of the street, through the roofs. The facades touch at the top, and are maintained by was.
La ruelle des chats est une des attractions touristiques les plus prisées du centre ville de Troyes.
Cette ruelle très étroite donne une idée des rues médiévales, pavées avec une rigole centrale pour l'écoulement des eaux. Reconstruites après le grand incendie de 1524, les maisons s'élargissent en hauteur, et les étages débordent sur la rue pour augmenter leur surface, l'impôt était calculé sur la surface au sol. Cette ruelle doit son nom au fait qu'un chat peut, en effet passer d'un côté à l'autre de la rue, en passant par les toits. Les façades se touchent par le sommet, et sont maintenues par des étais.

France is a beautiful country for photographers, sorry I am never been in this part of France, but this is nevertheless very nice.
The narrow street and construction of the façades in background is wonderful.

Bonjour Jean-Jacques,
Les cités médiévales sont toutes pleines de charme, et celle-ci ne déroge pas à la règle. Jolie percée à travers cette pittoresque ruelle étroite dont l'architecture est très bien mise en valeur. On se croirait encore en plein moyen âge ! Le point de vue et la qualité sont excellents, les contrastes de lumière extrêmement bien gérés. Il doit être bien agréable de se promener dans cette ville.

Bonjour Jean Jacques,
An interesting note and a very fine photograph of this mediaeval narrow street or alleyway. One can just imagine how very easy it would be for these half timbered houses to catch fire and how quickly fire would travel from one building to another - and little chance of people being able to escape along these narrow streets.
This is a beautifully composed shot with the distant brightly lit and colourful half timbered buildings framed by the darker, shaded buildings in the foreground. Your viewpoint gives a very good impression of the narrowness of this alleyway as well as clearly showing the street's central drainage channel.
Excellent light management, fine colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

J'ai pris presque la même photo. Tout en espérant qu'un chat noir se présente avec la queue bien relevée qui nous regarderais directement dans les yeux avec ses yeux jaunes . J'aime beaucoup l'arrière plan.

Cette venelle est parfaitement mise en valeur par l'excellente gestion de l'exposition. Les zones à l'ombre sont bien détaillées alors que celles à la lumière ne sont pas surexposées. Bravo !

Lovely photograph of the narrow street. We call it Back light ? Whatever... The colours of the walls where there is light are in sharp contrast to the walls in the shade where it is only dark shades of brown. This contrast and the effect of light makes the photograph almost three dimensional.
The capture of the short porticoes held by brackets and hinges is fascinating. Love the point of view and the depth of the image.
The framing is nice and appropriate.

gotta love these Medieval towns, perhaps one day in the future they will all be gone.
I cant help but think how were the living conditions back in the day, with lack of toilets and proper plumbing, it must have been pretty bad!
Also makes me think how will the people 500 years in the future think how WE lived in 2015! fun to think about that stuff.
Looking forward to seeing more of your shots, especially with subjects like this one.

Bonjour Jean-Jacques,
J'avais tenté d'immortaliser cette ruelle il y a quelques années sans succès. La tentation était forte de choisir un cadrage plus large pour renforcer la sensation d'étroitesse de la rue, et c'est le piège. Ton choix de cadrage assez serré est très judicieux et permet de focaliser le regard sur les quelques façades éclairées par le soleil au fond. Le premier plan composé par ces colombages est bien texturé et relativement éclairé malgré l'étroitesse des lieux.

Pas assez de champ pour donner un peu plus d'avant plan, c'est ici que j'ajouterai une 2ème image en assemblage

I loved this picture...though I feel you could have cropped a bit of the left OOF part. The framing is excellent and so is the exposure contrast which makes this shot a delight to watch. The peeping view of the half-timber houses is superb!
