Rocamadour was named after Saint Amadour who lived there on the rock cliff in the 5th century. Saint Amadour is considered to have carved a famous wooden statue of Black Madonna the town is famous for. Another interesting fact about the place is that there is a piece of broken sword stucked in the rock. It is said to be Durendal, a legendary sword wielded by Roland, a heroic knight serving under King Charlemagne in the 8th century.
