The city of Chauvigny was founded around the year 1000, by the bishops of Poitiers, lords of Chauvigny then barons as from the 15th century.
It is built on a rocky outcrop of 350 m, formed by the valleys of Vienne river and Talbat river.
A 2 km length enclosure surrounded with the 15th century four churches and five castles built in the vicinity to each other.
The first bishop of Poitiers lord of Chauvigny is Isembert 1st, died in 1047. The bishops followed one another until 1789.

As from 1346, the city was strongly tested by the One hundred Year old War, the Wars of religion, the French revolution. It was restored as from 1843.

Chauvigny is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 7025 Chauvinois in 1999, distributed out of 97 km, that is to say 73 hab./km.
