What's more tempting to go tobogganing in the powder!

The off-piste means skiing, snowboarding or other winter sports, outside of marked trails or monitored. This activity should not be confused with freestyle skiing, which involves making faces at jumps.

The interest of the backcountry is to leave the crowded slopes and enjoy the powdery slopes ungroomed. Its practice requires some experience and caution, mountain accidents do happen and alerted rescue more difficult. Wearing a beacon, shovel and probe, coupled with a good knowledge of the snowpack and weather may be necessary. The avalanche risk is usually not negligible and should be regularly lament the victims more or less aware of the risks.

It is strongly recommended to follow trails that seem to lead in a field off-piste unknown. The snowpack is weakening with the number of passages and can yield as many skiers were previously passed at the same place. Moreover, the stability of the snow may have evolved because of the meteorological environment (average temperature, temperature difference leading to a transformation of snow), solar, wind, humidity, etc.. Finally, the authors trace could be either a very good knowledge of the terrain, an unawareness of danger.

In some countries, states or stations, backcountry skiing is illegal.

In France, many ski resorts emphasize the off-piste skiing as a selling point, in framing and organizing information courses and training.
