Version franaise:

English version:

The door knockers made their appearance in France as soon as the XIth century, mainly on the churches doors. They were used then for the requests of asylum. The use has spread and during the XVth century, it could be found commonly on the doors of houses. First, simple made of mallets, then of hammers, they became true art works. Forged, carved, with a rich imagination. Today, it is an endangered species, replaced by doorbells, and building codes.
