Photographer's Note

This is Beaucaire Castle, seen from the small town of Beaucaire, which lies on the Rhone River. The castle was built on a bold outcrop of limestone in the 1200s. From this angle it looks well preserved but it is a ruin on the inside. It was destroyed on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu in 1632 during the religious wars of the 1600s. The tower, or donjon, on the right is unusual because it is three-sided. Open in a new tab to see a larger version.
