Photographer's Note

The Canadian Memorial in Vimy recalls the sacrifice of the 66,655 Canadians killed from 1914-1918, and the final assault on the hill on April 9, 1917. Here, on the 110 hectares of French soil donated to Canada in 1922, 11,285 maple and pine trees were planted in memory of the 11,285 unknown soldiers. I was struck by the startlingly beauty of the sculpture and the powerful stirring expression of this mourning mother.
