Photographer's Note

Gargilesse, one of the "plus beaux villages de France" is certainly worth a visit. The crypt of the roman church – which itself has nice sculpture work - has some beautifull frescoes (XIII – XV th centuries). The crypt is rather big, and it has windows as the whole was built on a rock.
The vast crypt of the church has on its walls a rich iconography, telling about the Life of Christ, inspired by the apocryphal gospels. Amazing is the image of “Christ of the Apocalypse” separating the good and the bad people (depicted with a two-edged sword in his mouth – seemingly the only image of it’s kind worldwide ?).
A nice ancient statue of the virgin Mary would have been brought by crusaders from the Orient.
