The first idea of a bridge over the Kyrφnsalmi strait was as early as 1883. After 25 years considerations this railroad bridge over the Kyrφnsalmi strait was built in 1908. Before the bridge, traffic over the strait was taken care by a steam ferry boat.
Due the location in middle of the boat channel, this bridge was made as openable (?).

At the first the bridge was only for railroad traffic and other ground traffic used the ferry boat. Because the traffic was increasing, the bridge was opened for ground traffic in 1934, but because of the narrow construction, it wasn't very effective, because traffic could cross the bridge only one way at the time. Also all other traffice was stopped every time there was either boat or railroad traffic.
Finally, in 1960 a new highroad bridge was constructed and build (newest version can be seen at the background).

This old lattice bridge was almost destroyed by the Russian in WW2 and the damages have been repaired almost fully by now. As a remind of the war, there is still lot of bullet holes all over the bridge, left there as planned. These holes are not compromising the strength of the construction and railroad traffice is still using this openable bridge.
