Photographer's Note

I couldn't resist showing this chap, although I do know that his side is slightly over exposed. He looked so funny stuffing himself with wet bread..
This type of gull is called a black-headed gull - Latin name Larus ridibundus. It's a small gull, and summer plumage includes a chocolate brown hood, hence the name. Our black-heads are by now changing into their summer plumage, so many of them have varying degrees of brown mixed with white on their heads at present. This one seems to be almost through the change. For winter plumage the hood is white as the rest of the bird, only a dark spot on the cheek remains. Length about 35-39 cm, weight about 230-260 gram, wingspan some 86-99 cm. Red bill and feet. Young birds have a narrow dark band on the tip of the tail, so this one is a grown up.
Treatment: Crop, contrast +10, saturation +10, USM and resize.
