Photographer's Note

The church of Our Lady of Lourdes Capuchin was built between 1904 and 1929 according to the project engineer Giovanni Maria Curet and Cornelie Budinich. The neo-Gothic building designed more modestly ordered by the nuns of the Institute of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, was soon replaced by a monumental church to celebrate the miraculous cure of the guardian of the convent of the Capuchins, Father Bernardin krivanić in Lourdes.

The church was built as a double neo-Gothic basilica with rich polychrome Lombard style. The first basilica is the Church of Mary Lady of Consolation, built in 1907, and it is the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes, built between 1914 and 1929, 70 meters long. The sanctuary is decorated with stained glass windows, while the facade of the church and altar plaster were made by the Venetian sculptor Urbano Bottasso and local stonemason, Antonio Marietta.

The frescoes inside were painted by a famous painter of Rijeka, Romolo Venucci. Although a tower 75 meters high was never built, this church has become a place of vital interest to all travelers.

La iglesia de Nuestra Seρora de Lourdes de los Capuchinos fue construida entre 1904 y 1929 segϊn el proyecto del ingeniero Giovanni Maria Curet y Cornelie Budinich. El edificio neogσtico concebido de manera mαs modesta, ordenado por las monjas del Instituto del Sagrado Corazσn de Jesϊs, fue sustituido pronto por una iglesia monumental para celebrar la curaciσn milagrosa del guardiαn del convento de los capuchinos, el Padre Bernardin krivanić en Lourdes.

La iglesia fue construida como una basνlica doble en estilo neogσtico con rica policromνa de estilo lombardo. La primera basνlica es la Iglesia de Marνa Seρora de la Consolaciσn, construida en 1907, y sobre ella se encuentra la Iglesia de Nuestra Seρora de Lourdes, construida entre 1914 y 1929, de 70 metros de longitud. El santuario estα decorado con vidrieras de colores, mientras que la fachada de la iglesia y el altar de yeso fueron realizados por el escultor veneciano Urbano Bottasso y el picapedrero local, Antonio Marietta.

Los frescos en el interior fueron pintados por un famoso pintor de Rijeka, Romolo Venucci. Aunque nunca se construyσ una torre de 75 metros de altura, esta iglesia se ha convertido en un lugar de interιs esencial para todos los viajeros.

beautiful facade. The decoration is so rich and attractive. I didn't have a chance to visit the northern part of the country. I suppose I have a reason to come back there -may be I could visit Slovenia at this occasion.

thats quite the ornate piece of architecture isn't it.
the longer i look at it the more and more i see the smaller details. just think about the amount of work that went into creating this. and after all these years it still looks fantastic. it would be nice to see the building in its full view too. very attractive piece you chose here though. excellent details. cheers

Hello Luis,
I like the decorations on this detail from the church. I wonder why they allow plants to grow on it, the bigger they get, the more destruction they will cause. The photo seems to be leaning to the right a bit, easily corrected in Photoshop Elements (see WS photo).
