Photographer's Note
Belgicum
After the post of Herlinde Koelbl exhibition last week, I want to show you an exhibition of an entirely different photographer who’s into old school documentary work: Stephan Vanfleteren. It’s shot at the "Belgicum" exhibition in the Antwerpen Fotomuseum. For me Stephan Vanfleteren was thι photographer discovery of the last years.
In his own words:
“Through flat country, passing language borders, through decrepit industry zones. An excursion of a country with scars, in search of an untraceable identity but with the melancholic soul of a 177 years old nation."
Check out the web site of the museum here and his website here.
The public was clearly mesmerized by the large prints and I tried to capture the ensuing tension. In the WS I zoomed in on this tension a bit further.
The PCS3 tech: I first ran the pic thru Noiseware (the low light capabilities of the little Fuji are fab but at 800 ISO it's beginning to struggle with the noise), then altered the saturation, contrast, curves and levels for the whole pic and some elements separately, using different layers, enhanced the edges, USM-ed added a frame and resized, and enhanced the edges on a 65% transparent frame and did a gentle USM (1,0px, 17%) again.

hi bert,
beautiful tones you've managed here.
i first thought it was an (almost) black and white conversion or rather a duotone but i very soon realized it's not.
lovely use of the soft exhibition light, attractive silhouettes and their reflections.
very eye catching composition of a very interesting exhibition.
thanks!

Hi Bert,
how are you? I see your humour in life is present too in the shots! Who's looking who? It seems the people looking the portraits, or the portraits to people? I like the composition, the people as shadows in the middle, the light over the shots in the wall. Interesting view!
Greetings
Angel.

Incredible how you do THIS with a small compact cam. I carry a bulky prosumer and most of the times the results are only average.
Impressive shot, full of mood and with a very pleasant game of shadows and light.
Parabιns, meu amigo.

Hello Bert,
Goed gedaan Bert, bedankt.
Prettige werkweek, uit een verregend Vlaanderen,
John.

Hallo Bert,

Looks like a very interesting exhibition of fabulous portraits. And with the excellent exposure, you gave that curious "exhibition atmosphere" very well.

Hi Bert,
An excellent and artistic shot. Very nice with a B& W picture and the visitors in silhouette. The photos of the exhibition are amazingly detailed and sharp. Very clever light management. TFS and have a fine week!
Cheers,
Ulf

An arty mood, a arty life moment, well captured, well managed. The technical choices are good. It works... A special mention for the light : soft and precise.

Hello Bert. I like photos of art exhibitions. Therefore your black-and-white photo pleases me very well. The nuances of light and shade are very well represented. The total scene is worth seeing. A good shot. Best regards, Wolfgang.
