‘Kortrijk - Inside the Beguinage - 3’

More photos of the restored Kortrijk Beguinage.

The two young ladies on the bench are certainly not beguines.
Of that I’m sure because the last beguine of Kortrijk died in 2013 at the age of 93.
Her death puts an end to a tradition that started in 1238.

In the main photo you see two buildings that are not ordinary houses.
The building with the columns on the left is the beguinage's chapel. It was first built in 1284 in the Gothic style, restored in 1464 and dedicated to Saint Matthew.

The red brick building with the tower houses the Saint Anna Hall, an experience centre that guides you through the history of beguinages and tells you more about the one in Kortrijk.
There you can also admire a number of beguinage treasures.

In WS2 you see the former home of the Grand Lady. Now it is a coffee house and eatery.
The management of a beguinage rested with the grand lady. This responsible person, chosen by the beguines, was in charge of the beguinage. She had the task of enforcing the statutes and supervising the general organisation.
Some large beguinages had more than one grand lady.

I apologize if the term 'grand lady' is not the correct term in English. This term is the result I found in Google Translate as I couldn't find anything in English about this professional position anywhere else. After all, beguinages did not exist in English-speaking countries…
