Antwerp was the most important port and trade center in this part of the world during the late 15th century, after the decline of the old Flemish port cities Bruges and Ghent.
In the early 16h century a staggering 40% of all trade passed through the city.
Religious turmoil and the break-up of the low countries eventually lead to the city's decline, which kickstarted a golden age for the newly independent Dutch nation.

This picture shows a part of the old quayside. Behind me is the river Scheldt.
The building peeking through between the two towers is the Vleeshuis (lit. 'Meat House'), one of the oldest buildings in Antwerp. Its construction started in 1501 and was completed in 1504.
The building functioned both as Guildhall for the Butchers and as a meat market. The narrow streets around the Vleeshuis slope down towards the river, facilitating the butchers' helpers' cleaning up. As a kid I used to imagine streams of blood flowing towards the river...
Since 2006 it houses the City Music Museum.
The two buildings that frame it are more recent additions to the Antwerp quayside.

Bonjour Benny,

This is a very nice shot of the buildings. The architecture is quite dramatic here. That blue sky really adds to the color balance of the photo. Vertical is such a suitable choice. Best, Sothy

Hi Benny
Just lovely architectural snap of having interests in both contents and colours. I love the oldie atmosphere of this with contrasty sharpened cones lends this the extra impact. Great stuff, bright and clear so well composed, Congrats.
Best regards

Hi Benny
Great architectural shot with straight verticals and well-selected portrait format. Dramatic clouds and the empty street create a mysterious atmosphere.
I really liked your city - I visited briefly 3 years ago.
Best wishes

Hi Benny
i'm glad I clicked on your gallery page today!!!!!
I absolutely love love love this city shot.
perhaps its the rounded turrets that make the scene look so beautiful, not sure, but the overall look of the buildings and the color tones are very striking.
the thought of butchers blood flowing down the streets make it that much better. Past and Present all in one.
fine post
cheers

So many sharp towers in one frame :)
