Two weeks ago I was in Ghent the weather was not excellent but I saw this image.
I found this nice with the old building to the right side, this is the facade of the old courthouse.
Also the boat on the river was certainly worth it.
History:
Originally had the Upper two arms; next Muinkschelde ("Schelde Monks"), there was also the Oude Schelde, from Ter Platen about Lange Violettastraat. From its confluence with the Kuiperskaai they formed the Nederschelde or Reep. This was from 1960 to 2015 partially muted, the area under the Franηois Laurent Square was vaulted. The Lys also had several branches, namely the Old Houtlei (dug in the 12th century as a defensive moat, filled in 1898-99) and Ottogracht (muted in 1872-73). Between Muinkschelde and Lys was in the 11th century the Ketelvest dug, as the then southern rampart of the city.

Good Morning John,

I have recently been walking along the canals in England and my friend has just bought a narrow boat, so I can't think of a more peaceful way to travel!
Although, for you, the lighting may not have been perfect, there are lovely, rippled reflections on the water and you have been able to bring out the colours nicely.
As always, you have an excellent eye for composition, the canal being both a lead and an important element, the boat moving into space and the buildings creating a very interesting, natural frame surrounding the focal feature.

The length of the canal is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings. The cloudy sky does not hurt the output of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hi John,

If it wasn't for that almost white sky no one would think about the weather not being good for photos, as the light on this image is quite pleasant, as are the colours, the great clarity and the tidy compo. I only find strange that the waterline on the background is leaning to the left, as with such calm water, I would expect that it was plane.

Hi John,
Your composition on this is really beautiful, especially how you have composed the great portico on the extreme left. It gives an excellent sense of the majesty of the building while also allowing a great wide open view of the river and the oth architectural jewels all around. I love the light and rich colors too.

Ja, deze plaats in Gent ken ik. Je kan er wel vaker bootjes op het water zien.
Je toont ons hier heel verschillende architecturale stijlen. Ze hebben gemeen dat ze prachtig aan het water gelegen zijn.
De compositie is goed met de aankomende boot waar de opvarenden allen uitkijken naar iets aan land.
Mooie kleuren met reeds beginnende herfsttinten.
Goede diepte en uitstekende scherpte.

Opvallend dat we vandaag allebei een classicistisch gebouw op onze foto hebben. Deze foto heeft wel een beetje de sfeer van een wandeling langs de Spree in Berlijn. Wat kleinschaliger maar wel zo sfeervol. Meer verfijnd dan de Duitse architectuur.

for me, the building on the far right is the star of the show. it reall ydoes stand out well, and i like how its almost facing us yet we know its a side profile view.

not the best of light as you mentioned, but still attractive and a well managed scene.

Hi John,

You say the weather was not excellent, hmmm...I see nothing wrong with it here...if I'm not mistaken, that's the sun shining over the canal?? :) The courthouse sure stands majestic over this section of town, and I really like how it fuses with the classic architecture in the background. Looks like a nice day for a boat ride, despite any dealings with cloudy skies, the people look to be enjoying themselves out standing on the boat as it passes by. Nicely timed to catch this little journey, and as always, a strong composition to enhance it all. Enjoy the new day ahead. Take good care.

Hello John,

somewhere I read photographers were also a kind of painters. They are painting with light.

Also you're a painter with light. This image you've "painted" with a special light. A light, which only occurs at very specific weather conditions. It arises when a dark cloud cover opens and the sunlight gently breaks through. Dimmed sunlight might say.

Like most of your pictures is also this one an interesting and beautiful insight into your country.

Bonjour John

The boat makes a fine focal point and the dual sides of the canal provide lead in lines and perspective. Well composed with the sides of the canal starting in or near the corners. The orange red posts and boxes at right contrast well against the blue grey sky. Tfs!

Thanks to your map view, I just had a virtual overlook on Ghent to realize that many rivers go through this historic city.
You show with fine details a nice monument at right with the help of an hazed sun that conveys allover soft contrasts.

The building on the right is beautiful and is wonderfully lit by the light...but the architecture is not Flemish. The boat is a nice addition to the picture.
