Photographer's Note

This canal is a much photographed subject in our region. I too could not resist the temptation... It is the Schipdonk Canal and it is popularly called the "Stinker" in contrast to the Leopoldscanal, which is popularly called the "Blinker". These names would refer to the quality of the water years ago. Just above Maldegem the two canals meet and run a intimately close and parallel course towards the sea.

This picture of the Schipdonk Canal (the "Stinker") was shot from the Celie bridge at Sint-Laureins. It was early April and no leaf is yet to be seen on the trees' branches.
