ile Shkodλr (definite Albanian form: Shkodra, for other names see the etymology section) is a city and municipality in northwestern Albania and the seat of the county with the same name. It is one of the oldest and most historic places in Albania, as well as an important cultural and economic centre.

During many different epochs it has retained its status as a major city in the Western Balkans, due to its geostrategic positioning close to the Adriatic and the Italian ports, but also with land-routes to other important cities and towns in neighbouring regions.

The present municipality, which now extends from the Albanian Alps to the Adriatic Sea, was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Ana e Malit, Bλrdicλ, Dajη, Guri i Zi, Postribλ, Pult, Rrethinat, Shalλ, Shkodλr, Shosh and Velipojλ, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the city Shkodλr.[1] The total population is 135,612 (2011 census), in a total area of 872.71 km2.[2] The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 77,075.[3]

Its importance is heightened by the Lake of Shkodλr to the west of the city—the largest in the Western Balkans—that straddles Albania and neighbouring Montenegro. The population of Shkodλr municipality at the 2011 census was 77,075, while Shkodλr County had a population of 215,347.
