On the edge of the old town in Havana is the Parque Central and is surrounded by grand buildings including the Gran Teatro. Originally it was the Palacio del Centro Gallego, a theatre that opened in 1838. It was completely remodelled and re-opened in 1915. The facade is decorated with sculptures by Giuseppe Moretti (Italian) depicting Charity, Education, Music and Theatre. The theatre staged grand operas and concerts. It is now the permanent home of the National Ballet of Cuba but also hosts concerts, lectures and has a gallery for art events.
The old Colonial buildings in Cuba are delightful and range from Baroque to Neo-classical to Art Deco. Post 1959 and the revolution the buildings have been largely prefrabricated. Although the beautiful old buildings are crumbling there seems to be a lot of reconstruction work being carried out to help preserve them.
What caught my attention when looking up at the facade was the lady gazing out of the window. Her small figure seemed to emphasise the grandeur of the building.
