Photographer's Note
This is Scaly-breasted hummingbird targeting on nectar of flowers on a park in the city of La Fortuna. There are hundreds of species of hummingbirds in the world. I couldn't possibly identify the right one by myself. But our local guide did, of course. Apparently Costa Rican tourist guides have to have deep knowledge of local wildlife.
According to ebird.org Scaly-breasted hummingbird is rather large, dull-plumaged hummingbird of humid tropical lowlands. It favors forest edge and adjacent clearings with trees, flowering bushes, and gardens.
Another angle of attack in the Workshop.

Hello Kari,
The bird is not very bright, but the flowers are. But even then it's the fantastic little bird that grabs my attention. I am sure that you were happy to manage this photo with such fine sharpness on its head and beak and a good exposure.
It reminds me of the silly old joke you probably heard.
"Do you know why the hummingbird hums?"
"???"
"It doesn't know the words!"
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Kari,
I've seen hummingbirds in Colombia and know it's not really easy to photograph them.
Here you have the bird excellently in profile.
Well presented on a dark blurred background while the vivid colour of the flowers makes the photo extra attractive.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Kari,
A great photo of the beautiful hummingbird with its long beak and piercing eyes. It looks perfectly sharp, apart from its wings of course, which just move too fast all the time, but then the motion blur works very well. Nice inclusion of the bright yellow and orange flowers.

Hello Kari,
A fascinating note about this particular hummingbird and two excellent photographs to accompany it.
Both of your pictures are excellent but, while your workshop one shows a different "angle of attack" as well as some nice droplets which contribute to the sense of action, I think your main image is the better of the two.
In fact, these must have been incredibly difficult images to capture, if only on account of the remarkably rapid speed at which these birds' wings beat. Also, the natural colours of the bird are, as you say, somewhat dull while the yellow flower is incredibly bright - and that makes photography even more difficult. Yet you have managed to take these pictures extremely well, particularly as the bird itself is caught against a nicely dark background. And, though there is movement in the wings, the head and beak are razor sharp and clear.
I should have loved to have taken these pictures! :)
Fantastic!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Kari
Given the speed that their wings move this is a great photo of the humming bird and with the head quite sharp.

Good morning Kari,
A fabulous capture of the tiny bird, a "western version" to our Tzofit (Cinnyris-Osea), and a superb precise moment as it was hovering above the yellow flowers.
Cheers for that beauty.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hi Kari,
great timing and focusing, the flowers seem to be a little overexposed but the bird is great.

Hi Kari
What a beautiful photo and a joy to look at during these awkward times. I bet you are glad to managed to visit Costa Rica before the world went into a lockdown.
Great timing for the position of the bird in relation to the flower and just the right amount of blur in the wings.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Kari,
Hummingbirds are remarkable in their ability to fly backwards, the only birds that can execute this skill, I believe!
You have captured this example extremely well, clearly showing its long beak, perfectly shaped for entering flowers and collecting nectar. It's wings show some motion blur confirming the rapidity of their movement.
I have only ever seen them in aviaries but I have photographed a hummingbird moth, which seems to hover in the same way!
Keep safe,
Bev :-)

Hello Kari, hummingbirds are wonderful to see, and here you have managed an excellent shot where the body is in sharp focus.
It has rather dull colours but that doesn’t detract from this special picture.
Thanks for sharing, regards Jean.

Hi Kari,
I still remember how impressed I was when I first saw a Hummingbird in nature. I was actually walking with my camera on the UCLA campus where I have worked and suddenly I thought I have seen a huge insect... After a while I realized it is a small bird.
Great capture here. Nicely blurred background with well sharped eyes of the bird.
You caught it in a really nice classic pose
