Caye Caulker Cargo
A "cay", also spelled "caye" or "key", is a small low-elevation sandy island formed from sedimentation over a coral reef. So they are found in tropical environments, including of course the Great Barrier Reef and the Belize Barrier Reef. They are often habitable and inhabited, their surrounding reef ecosystems providing then food and building materials. The word "cay" would come from the Spanish "cayo" (many cayos in the Caribbean, especially around Cuba) which sounds almost like the French "caillou" (pebble) and one can wonder if there’s a sort of common origin.
Caye Caulker is one of those coral islands. It is narrow and long (ca. 8 km) and located in the Caribbean Sea approximately 32 km NNE of Belize City. It’s a rather well-known small island since it has been on the "Gringo trail" for quite a long time now, this Gringo trail being apparently no more than just a list of the backpackers’ favourite stops in Central and/or South America (Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Caye Caulker, Lake Atitlαn, etc.).
This photo was taken right after sunset near the utility wharf on the less touristic west side of Caye Caulker. Given the name of the boat, one can presume it just went aground near its home port. That perhaps happened not long ago; I saw a photo of it on Flickr where it seems to be very properly floating! The photo is not exactly as sharp as I wish it was, maybe owing to too slow speed for the focal length, but I was happy to have caught that subtle veil of fine rain in the air.

Hi Claude,
it looks more dramatic than it possibly was when it went aground. It is not very deep water here either but it is strange that nobody try to salvage the boat!
On the other hand i can remember the message written in the street at Caye Caulker: Go slow! so perhaps it will take more time:)
Beautiful colors of the sky and an interesting composition with one sailing boat at each side of the fishing boat, tfs!
Best regards/

Hello Claude,
Interesting notes which supplied lots of new information.
The ship makes a dramatic focal point even if there was less drama than might be suggested! It dominates the f/g and makes a very strong contrast with the yachts, sleek and high, against a pastel sky.
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello Claude,
an unusual composition, a picture that's very lovely, interesting and full of atmosphere. The old cargo boat has been captured from an excellent angle, it sits in the frame like a wounded animal. I like very much the addition and contrast of the elegant sailboats on either side. I also like how the scenery is divided in cold and warm tones and how the cargo boat features both. The weak warm light and the rain around the decaying boat create a very special, quiet and melancholic mood. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Claude,
Excellent old ship and sailing boats close-up photo with very nice colors, perfect light, very good clarity. The well-chosen tight crop eliminates all unwanted distractions.
Very well done
Wish you a very nice weekend.

Hello Claude - Attractive pastel colours make a fine backdrop for the old cargo boat and give the shot lots of appeal. I like the contrast between the old lady and her elegant and modern sisters!
Have a nice weekend

Hello Claude,
The sharpness is good enough for me, because it's really the colors and the composition that matter here. You've created a rather poetic composition of the grounded cargo boat with a small yacht on each side beneath the pink and blue sky. The haziness of the fine rain is superbly captured.

Gert

Hi Claude,
A beautifully composed picture with very attractive colours. The three boats are well placed in a triangle and the colours are very attractive.
Kind regards

Hello Claude,
the unfortunate cargo vessel makes an interesting sight sandwiched between the two smaller boats.
The pink and blue colours combine very well in a fine photograph.

Hi Claude

Great composition and light.

Colors were what attraced me to this photo even though I normally prefer intense colors... The thing you are complaining about - sharpness, well in my opinion it wouldn't improve the photo because this way it's sort of mystical... Love it...

Hello Claude,
While the subject itself is a rusty and ruin boat, but the light and the sunset color with rain cloud touching down on the water give a very romantic mood. The rusty boat adds to the composition as a daily life image and without, it would be more of a postcard type image. I love it. Good choice to include the sinking boat, it gives it a soul than just a pretty picture.

Hi Claude
it looks like its raining in the bg, but its probably just the lighting?
love these abandoned shipwrecks, doesn't matter if its real or fake, they always make for excellent subjects to photograph.
lovely light, smart placement of the horizon line and its an added bonus to have the sailboats in the bg.
nice shot
cheers

I really like this. Something about the beautiful light in the sky juxtaposed against the dark rusting boat. And of course those two elegant sailboats. The cold sea also complements the warm sky well. Great shot.

Hi Claude,
Wonderful warm vs cold color contrasts between the blue water and the mauve sky with excellent sharpness. The 2 bg yachts nicely frame the sunken wreck in the fg. Tfs!
