Photographer's Note
Son Doong Cave, in central Vietnam – the world's biggest cave.
Son Doong was discovered by a local farmer in 1991, and was only really explored fully a few years ago. Its remote jungle location has kept it well off the tourist map, and a rappel down into its depths will take you where very few people have walked before.
Unlike a lot of wilderness areas in Asia, there's no rubbish here. Once you enter Son Doong, you leave the world of humanity behind, and enter a realm of pure, unadulterated, natural grandeur. Climbing through its immense chamber is a true Indiana Jones experience.
Son Doong, quite simply, is spectacular. Raw, yet fragile. I hope that the Vietnam government will do all it can to protect this place, while allowing nature appreciators to experience one of the world's most beautiful natural wonders.
