Photographer's Note
Nan, Thailand
H'mong Village
Children are children. Boys will be boys. Play will be play. And as long as children play, whether in Nan, Thailand or all over the world, there will always be implied leaders. Among these three, he was the one third from the right.
He led the boys when they followed me around the village. He led the boys while they were playing. He led the boys in their little naughty stuff while taking this picture, among others. And he led the boys when they queued for the bread that we distributed to them .
This is an experiment on DOF.

Interesting experiment. You managed well to focus the attention on the central boy, as it was your goal.
The fourth boy on the left does not seem to participate to the scene and disturbs a bit the focus on your subject.

And there is something in their expressions that really supports your note too. The other two does not have the same confidence in the faces. The Dof exercise is well done Manny and the backlight helps showing the shapes of their faces, the bright part on the left side of their faces also separates them from the next. Maybe the area on the left is a bit too bright.

Usually I would say that when there is a large blown out area in an image my eyes are drawn there and away from the subject. To be honest this is not the case here. The boys and only the boys attract my attention. Now for the DOF: excellent. The fourth boy in the background makes a very nice addition. Sort of like he's running away from the "gang"...the rules of the playground, in a way. Excellent image!

Very fine experiment - both the DOF and the exposure. The "leader" very well set in focus and the others works as a nice frame - very well done Manuel.

Well done, Manuel. I think your experiment in DOF worked perfectly - the details on the leader's face are the sharpest. The 'white' background contrasts well with him and draws our attention more. The 'smaller' boy watching in the background, adds to the importance of the leaders. Well captured. Good note.

What a great out come of your experiment Manuel. This is just to great. How you have focused on the third boy (the leader) and gradually given less focus to to the boys in front. You are telling the story even without the note here Manuel. Really really good. Keep it up.
BTW, I was hearing a couple of students taking on the bus the yesterday. The were studying to become photographers and complained about how boring it was to do potraits. That it was difficult to find insperation and do something difrent, etc, etc. I could not help to think about you. Had they only seen your potraits they would see how much inspiration there is and how great pictures they could take. This is just another example of that Manuel.:)

Great composition manny, i like the way you shaped this group in a diagonal and focused on the 3rd kid. most critiques will probably ask for a focus on the front kid, but IMO it works pretty well as it is. And in fact, why act like a sheep and always use the same dιja-vu techniques. Genious comes from daring. You did and it is very Effective. bravo! nice also to havce this kid in the back almost disappearing in the harsh light. excellent shot
PS: I just read your note (always done afterwards for me to keep me 100% free in my judgment). and I nderstand now the why of the focus on the 3rd boy! Bravo!

The three faces against the washed-out background is great. The limited DOF is just right. The 4th boy in the background is a great touch. This is a stunning photo. I like it very much!

Your experiment was very succesful – the DOF is just great.
And the composition and tones as well. I like those little differencies between the poses of the boys and the expressions on their faces. The boy in the background is a great addition. And the white areas in the background makes the shot more effective, I think.

Good work experimenting with DOF Manny, I like the results. Normally, I think people would focus on the guy furthest right and let the others fall out of focus gradually, but this works in that you have highlighted exactly the boy you wanted to. Good job on getting enough lighting to the faces under very contrasty circumstances. The pure white background doesn't bother me much. I am of the belief, especially when shooting people, that if you have your subjects exposed correctly, blow outs don't usually do much harm. I think this photo takes that idea to the edge ;). The very bright background has done some very interesting things to the last boy. Not sure if that is good or bad, but I find it strangely appealing. This is also different enough from you Manny that I appreciate its uniqueness.
As a personal aside Manny, I kind of wish I knew what camera you are using when you take your photos. For me, it can help to make suggestions at times knowing if this was an SLR vs. your all in one (nikon 4500 in your profile). It won't make me enjoy a photo any more, but knowing what you used to take a shot can be informational when suggesting changes.
Another good shot Manny, and I really do like how this is different than many of your other shots, yet still of very high quality.

A very good portrait, very well composed. I don't mind the bright background to much and the sharpness is spot on. Well taken.

I liked your note!
Very good composition and I think the boy in backgrond has a good position in your composition that made it more better!

Experiment succeeded, I have to say. As observed in some of the previous critiques, your way of handling the focus already tells the whole story you provided in your note - in addition - funny how I see the same kind of "degradation" in the confidence on the boys' faces as I see in the focus. Another ingenious part of this composition is to place the leader in the middle, and to have him "overlook" the guys next to him. The boy in the back is a good balance. I like it, Manny.

The DOF prresumably works as expected.. at least it works fine with the focus here in the middle of the pix... Interesting

Great, great. What more can I say? great results for your experiment. i like the boy in the background, it couldn't be so great without him, and the white, overexposed background somehow work like magic here. Very very well done, Manuel.

Dear Manny, I'm torn apart and can't decide if I like the overexposed background... Somehow it distracts me and for another part it helps to make the boys standing out big time... Yours, Jan

Very nice work with the focussing. The blown out background works well I think, concentrating my attention on the leader. A really good shot today.

You are presenting it in such an expressive manner using DOF, that there is no doubt left who is the leader! :-) Your notes are very strong too and make the picture perfect!

Very interesting shot. I like the kid and the overexposed area in the back. A little too sharpened to my taste.
