Photographer's Note
Hmong Village,
Nan, Northern Thailand.
Right after the mass at their mini-chapel, my companions gave our school's donation of boxes of clothes, food and money to the tribal leader. Some
distributed cookies to children. These three were a few of the hundred recipients. They sat at the door of the minimally lit chapel, munching on the oreo cookies handed out to them in a piece of paper.
From the point-of-view of a wannabe photographer like me, that momnet was simply overwhelming. Beautiful children were everywhere with their distinct joy and innocence. I was spellbound (and thus took a relatively few amount of pictures).
(Auto-adjutments, brightness and contrast adjustments, unsharp masking).

Cookies can bring barriers down, and a smile is the universal way of communication. You are a true advocate for children and the joy of childhood. The two on the left have an identical expressions, and the older one looks wise. The colors are great. You captured them beautifully.

I might have mentioned this before, but you have a marvelous way of showing kids without making us feel all sappy about them. We want to like them, and through your images, we see them as human beings that we want to enjoy being with. Gratefully, your images do not make us pity them; they are not propaganda or advertisements. They are simply images of inviting human beings.

I really like the way that the only thing in teh entire shot that the light is highlighting is the eyes, and that the effect works on all three kids. Nice mood. lovely shot.

This is very nice overall Manny. Good subjects and nice expressions. There are a few things here I would like to see done slightly differently though. First, and I am not certain you would have much control over this, but I would like to see a little brighter (or perhaps less contrasty) photo so that their hair doesn't dissolve quite so much into the background. Second. The cropping here is very good, but a couple tiny things. The hand of the boy in red being cut by the bottom of the frame is (very) slightly bothersome to me, as is the cropping of the top of the rightmost boys head. I don't normally mind the tops of heads being cropped, but since the other two are not, it seems just slightly imbalanced to me. I really like that only one of the three are actually looking at you. Must have been someone or something more interesting in the room than you ;).
Please don't take my suggestions the wrong way Manny, this photo is excellent, just the little things I noticed.

A great capture, Manuel. I like the way two of the kids seem more interesting in the 'cookies', than in you, but the third child is very focused on you. The dark colours and background add a nice mood to the shot. Well seen.

I like this shot Manuel, not one of your best though. i couldn't explain why. They seem to be very nervous.. Still I like the way you filled up the frame.

Nice group portrait - I like the consentration of the boy at the right side. I like the soft darkness behind - a perfect background - very well done (as usual) Manuel.

Still a beautiful composition, the glance of the children on the left goes elsewhere (which was the center of interest?), the child on the right on the photograph, observes and seems intrigued by the use of the apparatus. A photo report of great quality, Manuel.

unlike Darren, I like your cropping and the way the hair gets lost in the background leaving only the face in the open light. The expression of those two hungry little kids is just amazing. Great look on you from the third one on the right.. he is more intrigued by the camera than the biscuits...excellent DOF despite the difficult conditions of the shot. did you use a flash?

nice, but could be nicer, just one kid is smiling at you, others are escaping the picture... the scene is not consistent IMO, 3 kids in one frame but they don't work together, dont fit together... anyway, still not bad at all :) and i like your pictures a lot. oh, the frame is too thin imo.

Another splendidly natural shot of those kids, Manny. Each showing their own character and an engaging posture. As ever so often, the eyes are a magical focal point, and the right one looking at you in a wonderful way. Great colorful elements brought to the shot by their clothes. Very well-written note again; great job.
On a side note, I think David's (dsidwell) critique on this shot is a masterpiece in summarizing the merits of your unique approach towards photographing children.

Another excellent shot of children, Manuel, you really know how to do it. I like the very serious expression of the third one, but all of them are beautiful. Very well done.

Great shot again Manuel. The one on the right who is looking at the camera is the most appealing and would be worth a photo on his own.

A good timing to capture the expression on their faces. I like the dark mood and light setting in this pix. Very good Manny

I love this pic for a lot of reasons. The first one is explained in your note.
I particularly like the way the little girl on the right is watching you. With conscience. The two other are in sentiments. Beautiful picture.
