Inside the "coolhouse" at the National Orchid Garden. This collection housed within the Singapore Botanic Gardens features more than 700 species of orchids is the largest single collection in the world; it was opened in 1996 and now also features over 2000 species of hybrids produced by a world-renowned breeding program, which actually began in 1928. It is a popular destination for visitors to Singapore, who usually head straight for the garden featuring the Vanda Miss Joaquim, the national flower of Singapore (and it had a lot to choose from!). Some species are kept in a "cool house," which is unique for orchids; these are from the tropical highlands and do better in more temperate climates, as the temperature in Singapore rarely dips below 90 during the day, even in "winter." Orchids are also available for purchase. The grounds are stunning and a walk through the gardens is a highlight of a trip to Singapore!
