Photographer's Note

Hermitage collection is concentrated in European art, especially those produced in Italy, Spain, UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Russia.
Portuguese or Brazilian art are not shown in the museum and I was surprised when I saw this old Russian tapestry.
In the first years of Brazilian Empire (between 1824-29) the Russian Czar wanted to improve relationship with Brazil and sent a scientific expedition to explore Brazilian nature, this expedition was headed by Langsdorff, a German doctor-scientist.
They crossed Brazil from So Paulo to Amazon and came back to Rio by the seashore.
I presume this tapestry was inspired in one of the images created by this scientific expedition. It shows a natural scene of East-Northern Brazil.Of course it isn't a natural event because different predators wouldn't attack in the same moment and spot as shown in the scene. But it has many informative parts:
We can see a jacar (Brazilian alligator), two jaguars and a puma. We can see fishes and a huge tapir, a cateto (a kind of wild pig). In the top you are able to see a branch with cashew fruits, I guess some shrubs looks like manioc too. At right you can recognize a branch of tobacco with flowers, another plant native from Brazil.
PS: I discovered this tapestry is from 18th century, before the Langsdorff expedition, probably it is linked with some painting created by the Dutches when they invaded east-northern Brazil.
