Photographer's Note

This shot was taken in Calamba, just outside of Manila. Contrary to my photo yesterday, this girl does not live in poverty. Her parents were running a small store on the main street (I may post photos of the store at a later date), and she was simply playing with friends along the side of the road. The stairway you see in the foreground is certainly more simple than what you would see in the west (or Taiwan for that matter), but the simple style of construction seemed to be quite common in this area.

We really didn't spend much time in Calamba, just passed through on our way to Pagsanjan, but like so many places in the Phils, the people were so friendly. Considering its proximity to Manila, I feel quite confident I will go back.

Calamba is most famous for being the birthplace of Dr. Jose Rizal, who is one of of the Philippines most respected figures. He was a doctor, historian, poet, novelist, painter, sculptor, etc. He did much for the cause of personal and national freedom for Filipinos and was made somewhat of a martyr when he was executed by the Spanish (all paraphrased from the Lonely Planet).

Uncropped, focal length 88mm, handheld, ISO 400, normal post processing.
