Photographer's Note
Barefooted, and wearing hats (some wearing native rattan hats) to help protect themselves from the sun's heat, farmers in Nueva Vizcaya plant rice. They plant rice following straight lines, in this way, sufficient space, water and soil is evenly provided to each rice seedling; this will also make it easier for farmers to cut them down during harvest time. It's a back-breaking activity as they have to do it in a bent
position all day.
The farmers usually work in groups, each having his own area of responsibility. Planting is almost complete for this particular field, afterwhich they'll transfer to another unplanted/empty field to continue their work.
Nueva Vizcaya is located in the northern part of the Philippines, where farming/agriculture is the no. 1 means of livelihood.

That green colours of rice rarely fails to produce good images. This is not an exception. I like the contrast between the orderly lines and the haphazardly located figures. Both the lines and the people provides a strong perspective. The light is a little dull, but you make the most out of it.

Beautiful photo, Alford. I love the colours. It takes skill to get such a lively shot out of such a depressing scene. Cropping it horizontally was a good idea, and works well here. I like the title too. Well done!

A very great picture of the farmers barefoot the rice to plant, precise artwork all this on one row. The dark part and the light green part its different, but this give lovely variations. Everything sharp and clear.

Glad to see this great shot about working the people in the rice field which is very hard work and need a high energy and hope for doing it,...very well captured with a great perspective,also depth without the sky is very nice here,and I like it very much,good note,too,dear Alford,nicely composed and fine for theme.

a very good journalistic photograph. i know it's too late but lemme inform you anyway
this year is the international year of rice and there was an international photo competition held . the theme was anything related to rice. one of the judges was francesco zizola an italian photographer, one of my favourites.

You have a great eye, Alford - this is a beautifully composed shot. The people are so well placed against the orderly lines of the fields, and the colours of their clothing have quite a graphic impact against the lovely green. I like that you excluded the sky. Very well done indeed.

Terrific capture from the fields. Rice runs much of Asia so it is good to see the hard work put in to growing it. This traditional way of planting has been replaced in some places like Japan and Taiwan where machinery reduces the burden. Great colours and cropping.
