Photographer's Note
It's been a while now since I uploaded a photo to TE that wasn't from India but after my last photo of Mt. Kangchenjunga at dawn I was reminded of a photo I took on a trip to Nepal nearly 3 years ago of the beautiful Mt. Machapuchare at dawn. After much searching through my CD archives I finally managed to track it down.
This photo shows the twin peaks of Mt. Machapuchare just as the first light of dawn rises above the horizon behind us and turns it into a mountain of gold. Mt. Machapuchare (6,997m / 22,943ft) is more commonly known as Mt. Fishtail due to it's twin peaks and middle ridge looking rather similar in shape to the tail of a fish.
The photo was taken from one of the most famous and popular viewpoints in the Himalayan mountains called Poon Hill (3,210m / 10,531ft) which is in the Annapurna region of the Himalaya, about 25km north of Pokhara, the main town of the region.
Machapuchare has never been climbed to its summit. The first, and only known, attempt was in 1957 by a British team led by Jimmy Roberts. They climbed to within 50m of the summit via the North Ridge, but did not complete the ascent as they had promised not to set foot on the actual summit. Since then, the mountain has been declared sacred, and it is now forbidden to climbers.
Technical details (or lack of them!): I took this photo nearly 3 years ago and the various settings and camera data have not been saved along with the photo file. Unfortunately this means I can't tell you any details such as shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings etc. and I've no hope of remembering. Sorry.
PP details: Full-frame shot, no cropping; Slight brightness/contrast boost; Minimal work to reduce graininess; White frame added.
Regards,
Rich

Hello Richard,
A beautiful image, hard to understand from a thumbnail glance. What I see here is very special, amazing to see that this peak would get more sunlight over a daylight period due to the extreme height. Very mystical, special and well taken. Extraordinary.

Richard,
Very good photo, I like the composition, and how the clouds form some kind of layers. I like the contrast between the dark fg and the lighted peak.
Good exposure.

Hi Richard,
Simple but effective. Although the mountain peak is only partially shown, it creates visual tension and interest. Well composed ... I also like the depth created by the cloud layers and the silhouette mountain in the foreground. Well done! tfs

I am usually neither a mountain nor a mountain photo fan but how can I say something else than just imagine the beauty of the scene in real. This looks really magical, a tiny part is more spectacular than the full sight, this is how drama works for any arts, give us a little to let us imagine the infinite.

Hi Richard,
Love the atmosphere in your picture. The overall dark blue tones & the clouds give some kind of a mystical feel.
The little golden spot of light - well, that's somehow funny but when I first saw the image I thought it looks like a fish - with its head pointing upward-right... my imagination :). Then, reading the note, I learned about the mountain's common name...
Wonderful note! Thank you.

Hello Richard
This is a beautiful quiet scene.
You have really captured the beauty of the moment, and this really looks like it is "the magic moment" of the day.
The dark approach is excellent, the deep blue clouds look excellent and they create some interesting play with the dark mountain background.
Excellent work.
