Sabadee pi mai!
The Lao New Year is celebrated on April the 13th,14th and 15th. It is a rather unusual new year : here in Laos we are in 2551 ! These 3 days are public holidays and the festivities last at least a whole week. During this week, people do some sprucing up in their houses, temples are cleaned, some are even painted for the occasion! And the custom is simply to splash water on everyone! These three days are also the hottest of the year in Laos! So it's not so unpleasant to engage in giant water fights! Because that's what it is people ! Everyone, including the adults, joins the fun which also includes the throwing of flour! Everybody enjoys the fun here because everyone has a smile and is happy to celebrate the new year this way! In addition to the battles of water, we can attend ceremonies in temples to purify a Buddha (bringing luck).
Needless to say, one must be careful with the photo gear ! I had found refuge in a coffee shop behind a pillar and I set up the tele lens to take pictures without running the risk of showering the K10 ! I'll end this with a tip : find a remote corner for a little shooting time and then pack the gear and join the fun !

As I suspected that you will be celebrate Lao's New Year when you there. I'm happy and envy of you. this bring back my childhood me big time. Yes, a week befor the new year it's already water war going on. It hard for me to go home from school with out getting all my books wet, and that is a major problem since we didn't have much money for books but such a good time. As soon as we got out of school, we ran as fast as possible to get home and try to hide the books in a plastic bag. As for this picture it depict part of the celebration and the fun and cheerfulness in a kid's life. Fun moment so carefree, so innocent. Great time. I miss it.

Voilΰ une image qui respire la joie de vivre. L'espiθglerie se lit sur le visage du petit garηon (carrθment craquant d'ailleurs), et grβce ΰ ta note, on peut presque entendre les rires des grands autour...
L'instant est saisi au parfait moment. Et quel regard ! Je ne sais pas qui il vise, mais il y met du coeur ;o)
Merci d'avoir fait prendre des risques au K10 et de nous transmettre un peu de ce qui semble κtre une merveilleuse fκte.
La qualitι malgrι les conditions assez spιciales est excellente : le parfait flou d'arriθre-plan, luminositι et contraste, les couleurs, et surtout cette nettetι irrιprochable.

Hi Philippe,
Timing is the keyword here. Fresh bright colours and extreme sharp when seeing the waterdrops on his face. He likes playing, i see that in his eyes...wonderful ;-)
A great water ballet, done very good by your timing, framing and exposure.

1/200 has given the spray sharp enough to make it the strongest element of the conversation..
the sun seems to be right behind the child so the exposure features and results are pretty soft..which goes very well..given the subject..
