Photographer's Note
The tiny, secluded village of Shirakawa-go, nestled deep in the snowy mountains of northern Gifu Prefecture was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. What makes this sleepy little village special is that the buildings are mainly comprised of historic gasso-zukuri style houses. These houses withstand the rigours of heavy snowfalls year after year but need to be replaced quite often. It is said that the roof structures need to be replaced every 2 years; meaning that it's all hands on deck as the community gathers around to help with the replacement. Im sure that it becomes a true spectacle with the entire town participating in replacing each roof as needed for buildings with sizes upwards of 15 metres long x 10 metres wide and accomodating of several large families within.
On this particlar evening with the town ablaze in tourists, one lone lady clambers up to the counter for some refuge of the bitter cold outside. Finding such an establishment with an open seat on this night is a treasure indeed. She nestles up to the counter, taking in the warmth from the broth before her; forgetting for a second the biting cold outside. She is oblivious to the peering eyes of patrons outside as the catch the small glimpse of her; absorbed by her sliver of warmth as the wait their turn.

Brendon: this reminds of the stuff of another great oriental photographer here on TE, who shall remain nameless here. Great opposition with the DOF. A nice inclusion of endemic script. This is a VERY effective and melancholy image. regards, c

Hi Brendon,
I like the shot overall very much, the shot and the poetic title as well as the excellent note - the "package" in other words. The lady could, in all honesty be a tad "sharper" thus emphasizing the bokeh area even more but it is still a winning image. Subtle too.
Well seen!

Hi Brendon
Good idea . I really like the background and fg but the woman doesnt look very interested or interesting. The b&w is nice but it seems the signs should scream color. Anyhow well done.Ben

hi brendon
i see this in two ways: 1) someone cold looking for warmth through the window, looking for shelter, a warm drink and a place to kick back. 2) a voyeuristic feel. peeping in to see what this woman is up to. it's an interesting shot with well executed dof. well done!

Wonderful, Brendon... this shot is just a throwback to In the Mood for Love and Hiroshima mon amour, there's a mood in it that is truly resonant with the gorgeous title...

Hi Brandon,
Very poetic and sensitive image. I like the pale sepia tone; it gives a more cinematographic flavour to the picture. It is interesting the perspective in which you have taken the woman, in between the walls, through a narrow window space... She looks so quiet, lost in some thoughts... Very evocative...
Thanks.
Andre
