Photographer's Note

The town of Nikko was founded in 782 by the Buddhist priest Shodo Shonin. It is said that Shodo crossed the Daiya River on the backs of two huge serpents; and founded the first temple at Nikko. The name of the bridge is Shinkyo (or Sacred Bridge) and was first constructed in 1636, later destroyed by a flood. The current bridge dates from 1907. I have read somewhere that the newly restored bridge (early 2000's) cost in excess of 800,000,000 yen to restore.

The day was overcast and slightly drizzling. There was a mist/fog that loomed down through the river and worked great with the red lacquered bridge and the deep vermillion green.
