Photographer's Note
Today's photos have been confusing me ever since I scanned them from Kodachrome slides several weeks ago. I really had no idea where they were taken, except that they were from somewhere on the island of Lombok.
My diary from that journey to Indonesia in 1976 doesn't say anything about taking such and such a photo from this or that place on Lombok. I had a suspicion that at least the main photo was from a small port town, also called Lombok, on the east coast of the island. But it wasn't until yesterday evening, when I prepared this note, that I was able to identify both of these photos as from Lombok town, or just outside it.
Travelling with the Google car on the outskirts of Lombok town I was able to identify the mountain as the Rinjani. Its silhouette in these photos is exactly how it looks from that part of the island.
Gunung (Mount) Rinjani is the highest mountain of Lombok with its peak reaching 3,726 meters above sea level.
One more fairly anonymous photo in the WS.

Hi Gert
Interesting to see what I missed. Looks like a fissure in Rinjani volcano, which dominates the entire island, was emitting gas at left. I saw similar at Tangkuban Prahu outside Bandung in Java. The impoverished neighborhood hardly seems inviting after Bali. Sengigi on the west coast has now been gentrified and is preferred by tourists seeking a more relaxed vibe than Kuta / Legian on Bali. Plus the beaches are better than Bali if you make your way to the south coast. We hired a 4 wheel drive in Mataram and visited almost deserted crescents of white sand lined with coconut palms. A perfect scan with excellent sharpness. Tfs!

Hi Gert,
The presence of the children is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the houses and of the Rinja mountain in the background. The light is giving good colors output. Have a nice day.

Dear Gert,
No matter if you don't remember where they were exactly taken. Both photos are nice, but this time it was obvious that the main photo is much better.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

gert
the main post has a better quality of image, but the WS is more artistically well done.
lovely the houses in a high position, probably, or not, to prevent big waves, tsunamis or something like this. nice sample of local architecture.
take care

Hello Gert,
Isn't Google amazing!
You can travel all over and register places, as if you were actually there!
Ike has followed up lots of my photographs to identify the exact spots from where they were taken!
This is a very nicely composed photograph, with a definite lead line and these receding houses, creating an excellent sense of depth and perspective. The mountain, with fleeting clouds makes a good backcloth.
I find the houses curious, in that they are built on stilts, similar to lake based houses, and accessed by ladders.
I wonder if this area gets flooded at some time.
The children appear uninhibited and free, playing unsupervised in the village.
The only vehicle seems to be a horse-drawn one. I wonder what it is like today!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
***My pictures become almost not colored or with photoshop changed, sometimes cropped and small subjects remove, but never big photoshop adaptation, thanks for your always perfect attentions***
You took a nice picture with a lovely subject, I live again as child on the farm after WW II, was almost everything destroyed.
You took a nice picture with a lovely subject.
An excellent composition, nice presentation too.
Very well done, TFS.
Best regards,
John.

Hej Gert,
Et godt og meget klart billede i fint sollys. Landsbyen stεr meget godt frem med sine varme farver fra det blεlige bjerg i baggrunden. Det var en meget stille og rolig dag i byen.

Hello Gert,
You must have been overwhelmed by the beauty of the island so you took fewer notes on your photos.
Mount Rinjani is remarkably high considering Lombok is a relatively small island. The mountain provides a beautiful backdrop for this photo.
But the most remarkable here are these houses built on fairly high stilts. So I suspect that in another season the water can rise very high.
Beautiful with the pointed roofs in a row and a little boy looking in surprise at the foreign photographer.
Best regards, Paul

Hi Gert, interesting and unusual pics from Lombok, usually the people show the beaches and not the interiors of this island,so your post is very useful. Nice rural road in the WS and beautiful capture of poor wooden housed, with the surprised childs that say hello in the shadow. This time too the quality of colors is very very impressive! Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hi Gert
No matter where this was taken (and based on the building style it could almost have been taken way to the east in Papua New Guinea) it is an impressive photo from way back.
cheers

Hi Gert, Is it important if this is this place or that? Nice view of the huts on stilts and this wide road. Incredible sharpness and colours in this picture older than some TE members. You had a very good camera, films and now a scanner.
This mount Rinjani is probably the volcano and as the only mountain on Lombok, it is probably visible from every place. In Google, one can see it has the lake on top.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Gert,
What a great picture from 44 years ago on a remote island, yet lavishly green as saw on Google-Map virtual tour in Indonesia.
The scanned pcture is sharp and colorful, cheers for that.
Have a nice new day,
Ike

Hej Gert,
A beautiful view of this village of simple elevated wooden houses. Local kids add life to the scene. Blues sky and hazy mountain background look great.

Hi Gert.
This composition is splendid, with an ideal color on this beautiful day, these small houses on stilts remind me of a similar town from when I was there, although it was in 2007 these towns practically do not change, in the background the mountain I suppose is a volcano of the many who have.
Bravo for the quality of the photo after more than forty years.
The management of color and light are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the image.
Very well done. I like
Have a good day.
Very best regards.

Hello Gert, this looks even better in the large version.
As others have commented, the houses on stilts does suggest that flooding must occur sometimes.
The children have obviously noticed you as they are all looking your way.
The mountains in the background are impressive, and I would never have guessed that they are as high as you write.
Two very interesting pictures.
Kind regards, Jean.

Good news you managed to identify this place. I also find it annoying when I don't know where my photos were taken (e.g. shots I sometimes take from flying airplanes - I recently asked one of the crew and he didn't even know which country we were flying over!).
I really like the composition with the mountain towering over the scene at the bottom of the image, the line of houses is lovely and the kids playing on the right fill in what would otherwise be an empty space.
Have a nice Friday

Hello Gert!
I`m sure now 44 years later there is no wooden house left.
In comprism to other countries in SE ASia(2012) I found Bali very modern and had not the charm of the more poor countries.
Anyway it is agood shot of this village and the volcano in the background.
Regards,Ronny
