Photographer's Note
After a week on Bali in 1976 I spent a few days on the neighbouring island Lombok, a few hours by boat further east. Reading my diary I was shocked to realize I hardly remembered anything from those days. So the only thing I know for sure about today's three photos is that they were taken somewhere on Lombok, but whether the west coast or the east coast I don't know. Probably they're from both sides of the island and taken on different days.
But I have a strong suspicion that today's main photo is from the east coast.
Of course that is of no importance here. It just annoys me personally that not even the descriptions in my diary reveal where I took these photos, and those I will show in my next uploads.
What I do know is that one day I went to a town on the east coast, also called Lombok, where I believe today's main photo was taken, and where I could have taken another boat further east, if I had had the time for that. But in 1976 tourism had not yet taken off east of Bali, and communications were slow and complicated. I saw three or four other tourists while on Lombok, but generally "white people" were a rarity.
According to my diary I spent a lot of time going by minibus here and there across the island, but the villages I had read about and most eagerly wanted to see were always very difficult to reach by public transport.
So after a few days I went back to Bali, largely disappointed with my detour. I generally found Bali so much nicer and friendlier than Lombok, and there was so much more to see on Bali.
Two photos taken during higher tide can be seen in the WS. All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Hej Gert,
It is interesting to compare those two boats. The big one leaning strongly on it's bottom. And the trimaran balancing vertically. I wonder where that lady is going. Lovely half cloudy sky.

Hello Gert,
Even you were disapointed with your detour , you've captured here a splendid scene , with a beautiful coastal village in the palm groove , picturesque boats , and the real bonus of the woman walking on the sand .

Hello Gert
It's probably somewhere near Sengigi Beach. Kuta Beach Lombok is white sandy beach with even a little surf. I never made it to the east or north coasts. Definitely not Mataram which is inland a bit away from the beach. The black volcanic sand from Rinjani volcano is evident here. It also looks like it is not Bangsal where tourists catch boats to the Gili Islands (Ayer, Trawangan & Meno). The coconut palms add a tropical mood. Tfs!

Hello Gert,
I'm sure you chose this as your main post because it included a figure, although the w/s show beautiful views of boats and blue sea, the sort of shots you associate with is area of the world.
For scanned photographs, the colours have have come out exceptionally well, whilst the compositions are purely the skill of a good photographer.
There is nothing quite the same as personal experience. If someone had told you there was not much of interest on Lombok, you would have suspected that he/she was not necessarily looking for the same things as you!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Gert,
The presence of the person is animationg the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the boats, of the buildings and of the trees. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Wonderful sight with the tilted boats and colorful houses and trees across the bay.
Superb scanned photos, my cong.s.

Hello Gert, if you had not informed us, we would never have guessed that these shots were scanned from slides, their quality is excellent.
I like all three, it must have been difficult deciding which to
post as a main.
Looking at the listing boat, the water must have to rise quite a few feet before it floats properly again.
Lovely to see all the palm trees and houses in the background.
And of course the figure completes this scene.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Gert,
I think not that of east or west coast are important, your picture is perfect, almost a picture with a daily camera of today.
The boats during low-tide almost without water but remain very stable.
Nice composition and lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice weekend,
John

Hej Gert,

I liked the first WS and the main post too.excellent images of this island not so famous and known abroad. I presume it is almost impossible to know each island of indonesia as it is difficult to know those of greece. so many options..
PS:my state has the same population of sweden and I guess the same number of victims of covid..
take care

Hi Gert,
Tres fotos muito bonitas e bem feitas que poderiam figurar como a principal. Particularmente eu gostei muito da terceira no WS. Mas penso que esta primeira tinha a inclusγo da dama de vermelho como um belo diferencial.

Hi Gert
A good trio of photos from the pre-tourism era for Lombok. I haven't been there but I believe that most of the action these days is on the north coast and off shore small islands.

Hello Gert, I was only five days in Bali. There were some interesting temples that I haven't visited and the Mount Batur, but being with the group I had no choice. On the other hand, I have no idea what is the transportation there now. Maybe motorbikes? I saw rows of motorbikes and the drivers offering the rides. When there are few tourists it is difficult to visit interesting but not populated places. Then the only solution is to take a taxi or to rent the car with a driver, but it can be expensive for a lone traveller.
We wanted to spend one or two days on a small island near Lombok, Gili Island when we realized that it was the time to return.
Nice boats, different in the three pictures.
Best regrads Malgo

Hello Gert,
Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores and Timor was one of the rows of islands that we used to learn in school for topography.
Many streets in the Netherlands have been named after one of the islands of “Nederlandsch Indiλ”. For example, we lived in Deli Street for a while and now we live in a street with the name of a governor-general of the Dutch East India Company. Nobody knows this guy yet, but unfortunately there are still a few streets named after him.
This leaves enough memories of our dark past.
For example, I am currently reading the book 1674 by the Swedish writer Natt og Dag, who describes a black episode from the Swedish slave practices in Gustavia on the island of Saint Barthιlemy.
In this way your interesting photos bring up all kinds of thoughts, I like that.
Have a nice Sunday, Groet Rob

Hello Gert,
It certainly looks very nice on Lombok.
WS 2 has a very good composition with its different horizontal layers. Of course the sail of the nearest boat is very intriguing.
Your main photo shows an attractive village between the many boats in the inlet and the palm grove while a woman on the banks is looking for something, possibly crabs or marine animals that have been left in the puddles.
I also heard the same comment about the people in Lombok and Bali when I was in Indonesia in 1990. A pity because I already found Bali a lot less pleasant than Java. At least as far as contacts with residents were concerned.
Best regards,
Paul

Hi Gert.
Low tide is not the best time to visit some places, because that kind of stifle that covers the rocks, seen in the air looks like dirt, behind this the boats look ideal and on the shore the town with the palm grove, a nice day Sun.
Very nice coloring, in some very attractive tones.
Good brightness management and magnificent sharpness.
Very well done. My congratulations.
All the best and have a good start to the week.
Luis.

Hallo Gert Tell me why I just had a thought for 'Le bateau Ivre', poetry by Arthur Rimbaud who elaborated an ode to a 'drunken boat' that lost self control due to many pitfalls at sea!
On that occasion of a stranded ship, I modify the well-known saying for: 'It is therefore a case of one man's lost being a photographer's attractive gain'!

Hello again,
In this time it would make me a hard time to choose from the main photo and the WS1. Both of them are really excellent landscape with mesmerizing Koda-colors. :)
Best Wishes,

I suspect you have chosen this image for the main one because of this elegant lady in red walking along the shore. And what a good choice it is. But all three photos form a nice series of boat, water and hot climate. I like the colour of the sky reflected in the sea.
