Photographer's Note
The cooled sulfur is broken into large pieces and carried out in baskets by the miners. Typical loads range from 70100 kilograms, and must be carried to the crater rim approximately 200 meters above before being carried several kilometers down the mountain.
I tried to lift one basket; it almost destroyed my shoulder although I don't feel myself as physically weak.
Most miners make this journey twice a day. The miners are paid by a nearby sugar refinery by the weight of sulfur transported; as of September 2010 the typical daily earnings were equivalent to approximately $13.00 US.
The miners often use insufficient protection while working around the volcano and are susceptible to numerous respiratory complaints. (source : Wikipedia & personal comments)
You will not be asked for money or for food if you cross one of these fellows, but fo a cigarette. Isn't that ironic?
I chose a wide angle to enlarge the scene as much as possible in order to show the immensity compared to the climbing miner.

Hi Alexandre!
Very impressive volcano environment!
Very attractive nature picture!
Sharpness, exposure, chosen pov, colors, pp, contrasts, horizontal format, black & white borders and composition (with the inclusion of the "tiny" man down there) are all very good features here!
TFS - congrats,
Best regards,
Neyvan

Hi Alexandre,
Great shot of a fantastic place! Must be an unforgettable experience to stand there. Great sense of scale with that little human figure on the edge and the vapor pouring out makes the picture look dramatic. Very nice shot.
Cheers,

I like so much your series of sulfur mining at Ijen. This one is also superb, especially sharpness of the rocks in the foreground is exquisite.

dear Alexandre,
a beautiful shot of the wonder view in the volcano too,
the white smoke adds mysterious atmosphere to this unusual colored scene,
especially blue of sky and green of water are combined by this strange smoke here,
thank you for your excellent shot,

Hi Alexandre.
Fantastic shot, sharp and full of rich but natural looking colours. Astounding rugged rock features. Your wide angle choice really succeeds in achieving what you were aiming at. Thanks for the very illuminating note, too. What a job to have to do, what a place to have to carry those loads!
