Photographer's Note

Meet Mr. Mohanbhai. He is one of the middlemen, whom purchases the trash from the ragpicker women in Ramapir Tekra.

The pithawallas are popular loan-sharks with the ragpicking community. The women will repay the men by paying interest, which is deducted from the daily payment on the trash they collect. The amount of interest seems to be at the pithawalla's discretion.

The women will bring the rubbish home and separate it into 8 categories. Along the way, the middle men will separate it into upto 25 different categories and sell it on to make a profit of over 400% by the time it reaches the end. The collected material is used to make anything from bangles to furniture...

Someone is getting rich...that someone is certainly not the ragpicker.
