Photographer's Note
One of the temples at Thiksey Gompa houses a very impressive 15-metre high statue of the Maitreya, or future Buddha. This is it. Despite it's timeless appearance, the statue was only completed in 1981, although the gompa itself was founded in the 15th century.
Those who have seen my previous black and white work will know that I'm not a big fan of toning, preferring to keep my images as straight black and white without colouring them sepia or whatever. In this case I made an exception. When I was scanning the negative I mistakenly set the scanner to colour rather than black and white negative mode, so I was quite surprised when I saw the result. The golden colour seemed to suit the subject so I decided to leave it as it was. This is how it came out of the scanner, I just tidied it up a bit and sharpened slightly.

The grain of this shot actually works in its favour as well, giving it an antiqued feel. Lovely colours and textures; superb composition.

Excellent work. I love the resulting grain and colours here, it fits perfectly well with the subject. One of the best buddha pictures I saw recently. Congratulations!

Hi Ben,
I had some taken some pictures of Buddha painted on canvas during my recent South East Asia tour. I wish I could show you those because this image, with the superb grains and the colour tones (the magic of the orange filter I guess) has a great resemblence. Almost seems like being the product of the same school of art. I have a picture of the same statue (I guess this is one of the most photogenic ones in Ladakh) but its nothing compared to this.

Hello Ben!
What a nice mistake while scanning the B&W film, the golden colour of Maytrea looks like copper, looks nice.
It is funny that your Maytrea is alo photographed from the side perspective. Mostly you can see only front shots.
Kepp on shooting analogue :)
Greatings,
Daniel

Ben,
I agreewith your choice...
The colour is warm & very forthcoming.
I like the POV & the angle bringing best out of the face.
Great.
Cheers,
Prem.

Hi Ben,
I like that the Buddha almost entirely filled the frame. Lighting, texture, and colors are quite good. Best wishes. Danilo

Hi Ben,
This is an interesting effect. It does indeeed suit this statue and gives the shot a nice feeling. I like the way you have composed this by not including the whole statue and having some of the window in the background.

The image appears with a very special texture, deep gold and black colours, very good framed, perhaps not your best but a good one.

The colours is great here and I love the tones you've got, accidentally or not. Great framing here showing important features of the statue. Impressive stuff.
