Photographer's Note
Chhath, also called
Dala Chhath, is an ancient Hindu
festival dedicated to Surya, the
Hindu Sun God, Surya, also
known as Surya Shashti. The
Chhath Puja is performed in
order to thank Surya for
sustaining life on earth and to
request the granting of certain
wishes. The Sun, considered the
god of energy and of the life-
force, is worshiped during the
Chhath fesival to promote well-
being,prosperity and progress.
In Hindu mythology, Sun worship
is believed to help cure a variety
of diseases, including leprosy,
and helps ensure the longevity
and prosperity of family
members, friends, and elders.
The rituals of the festival are
rigorous and are observed over
a period of four days. They
include holy bathing, fasting and
abstaining from drinking water
(Vratta), standing in water for
long periods of time, and offering
prashad (prayer offerings) and
aragh to the setting and rising
sun.
In this frame you can see some devotees in the sacred river Ganges. After the holy deep one of them is prayering something to the god 'Sun'.
.
I like this frame for the arrangement of colours with the priest's hand with holy book of 'mantra' at foreground . Hope you'll enjoy it.
There is a black and white version of it in WORKSHOP . Hope you will also like that.

Hi Subhendhu - Vivid colour, serious faces, book of mantras and water; where could we be but India? This is a really good every-day-life shot so full of detail and very well composed and executed. Best regards Rosemary

Hello Subhendu,
You have captured this serious moment very effectively. I do like the position of the hand and holy book that tells a lot about the scene. Colours are beautiful. I enjoy your b/w version in the WS but I do think scenes of India like this one are very often about colour. Thankyou for showing such a delightful image, and including such a good note.

ciao Subhendu,
mi piace l'inclusione del libro di preghiere nell'angolo dell'inquadratura con le donne in preghiera dai costumi coloratissimi.
Attimo della tradizione religiosa ben catturato,
saluti

The concentration and commitment in the faces of these lady devotees is very well represented in this fine group portrait. Well composed with the inclusion of the book of prayer on the right. Very good colours and sharpness. Thanks also for the interesting and informative note.

Namaste Subhendu,
The B&W version is effective, evocative of a 1930s National Geographic Magazine. This color version, however, is far preferable considering the variation of colors and the exotic scene. The book, with the prayers actually visible, and the hanging leaves comprise a crucial touch, elevating the photo from excellent to spectacular.
Warm regards,

Hello Subhendu,
An interesting documentary, where I notice the serious expressions on the ladies faces!
Colourful as always, and the green vegetables offer a fine contrast to the red...
Interesting inclusion of the open book, I assume it has some significance for the ceremony..!
Greetings,
