Photographer's Note

I'm posting a workshop of this, because I'm curious which people would think is the better picture. Traditionally, photographers would cut out the background clutter, but for India pictures, I like the sense of being in the middle of a chaotic, busy place. I wonder if this picture makes more sense in the wider version I've posted in workshop. I appreciate any comments.

These kids were with their family outside my hotel in Rishikesh, Lakshmanjhula area, when I was returning from a visit to a temple. I asked for a picture with the whole family, but the parents were shy and stepped out of the picture.

I laughed when I saw the image--the smaller kid looks so surprised and shocked. Then I got back to my room and saw my face in the mirror. A priest at the temple had dabbed red paste on my forehead, and my sweat and the humidity had caused it to run down my face; I looked like I'd been violently punched. You can see that the boy has some of a similar problem.
