Photographer's Note

This picture was taken just outside the huge 12th century Lingaraj Temple in the city of Bhubaneswar, Orissa state, in 1987.

The flowers the girl is selling are meant for offerings inside the temple. The barefoot man is ready to enter the sacred site, where unfortunately I was not permitted as a non-Hindu. He is just about to reach for his wallet when he turns his head and discovers me, looking a bit surprised.

Bhubaneswar, a short distance from the Bay of Bengal on the east side of India, is the capital of Orissa, a mainly rural state with a lot of jungle and many ethnic minorities. It is also a state which is regularly hit by cyclones and flooding. The few days I stayed in Bhubaneswar I had a lot of rain, although no cyclone, and the streets were quite muddy.

This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide. In a workshop I will add a view of the famous temple as seen from a wall, or maybe it was the roof of a neighbouring house. I am not satisfied with the colours, that's why I don't bother to make it a regular posting. Anyway it will give you some idea of the place. And of course it was built around 1100 AD. I made a mistake in the ws note but I don't know how to correct it.
