Photographer's Note
In a city like Mumbai, which has more or less a 20 million strong population, one can imagine how much waste management is important...
So, as in many developping countries, it is a big business to collect, then sell that waste. Thousands of people roam the street for that. Some collect paper, others plastic, wood, even bones... you can see kids with magnets trying to catch any bit of metal they can on the sidewalks... Once collected, they bring it to a 'wholesale' dealer who in turn will sell it to who needs it(i dont know who that could be...)
Maybe some will find that pic a bit hard... but we can see by his stomach size that guy is nt poor...
As this guy is in the street and he is selling his goods...this will go in my Mumbai street vendors and shops theme
Hope you like it

Your photo and notes can be in India or in the Philippines as exactly the same thingis happening. Those sturdy plastic bags are even used to waterproof their roofs. I am not shocked. It is a reality and your photo documented this. TFS.

Hi Laurent, do youhave a new camera. this takes on a whole new quality. I believe this recycling industry goes on all over Asia, and probaly most of the third world. We reycle here of course, in the west ut it is not on the same scale. I remember in Burma seeign stalls selling the lids of jars and another just selling the empty plastic film canisters, (that we all used to use). A good documnetray shot and in the real TE spirit.

A good documentary shot: I was in Mumbay two years ago for business and I remember the slumps surrounding the city. a scene like this should be very common since there are a lot of people looking for something to eat.
Good note. Thanks for sharing

Hi Laurent, this is a great capture of Indian life. I remember seeing many things like this in my 3 weeks visit to India in 2005. People carrying sofas across 4 lane highways, and stuffing mattresses by the roadside. As well as the recycling I remember there were also so many repair shops, where they actually fix things when they break rather than throw them away - just like they used to in Europe!
TFS. Leon.

Bonjour, cher Laurent,
Une photographie sans complaisance et fort bien présentée. Cela aide à mieux comprendre la pauvreté qui règne dans certains pays.
Excellente prise de vue sans afféterie, présentant la réalité telle qu'elle est !

Hi Laurent,
I really admire the way you capture the daily life of people. This scene is also happening in the my country, the Philippines. And I agree with John C, "One man's waste is another man's goldmine."
Technically, the photo is superb... in composition, your POV, the sharpness, the colors... excellent work!
Cheers!

This is a fine daily life capture Laurent with excellent information value. Re-cycling is a worldwide issue and interesting to see how it is done in other countries. quality-wise the image is first-rate.

Hi Laurent,
As various versions of the saying go: "One man's waste is another man's goldmine." It is staggering to note how large some of these cities are in India that many of us have never heard of...Good clarity of detail, superb light, and high impact achieved with this close-up, no nonsense view. A most informative note to accompany. Well captured.

Salut Laurent,
Amicalement, Brigitte

Hello Laurent,
Good portrait under difficult life conditions. I know some people work paper cycling and they were not poor as you ask about your model and their bosses are rich after “wholesale”. But of course life is difficult every where. Your frame is “real” great documentary. Congratulations.
Friendly Regards,

Hi Laurent,
Yes the recycling florishes here in Australia too. People are often seen here going through rubbish bins to collect bottles because we have a small deposit that will be repaided when the bottle is returned to a depot. One of the reasons is to stop people throwing them around and polluting the other is so that they can be turned into something more useful. Your image is grand and no the man doesn't look as though he is going hungry. Thank you for sharing.
cheers,
Debbie

Bonjour Laurent,

Greetings Laurent.
It is true, sometimes we are fooled by the veneer and don't see the reality. Here we have a gentleman who obviously isn't for want of a bit of food. The grittiness of the shot helps us understand the true nature of life in a city such as this. The perspective is quite good as you have gotten very close and chose the high POV. The man silhouetted against the white bag helps bring his face out of the busy pile that he sits in. Excellent, telling photo.
Regards,
Chris.

Hi Laurent,
The beautiful generally do get more praise; but your shot is the exception; with it's excellent detail and framing with the man surrounded by his work. I especially like shots of people at work.
We also have fat 'cannery workers.' In San Diego, most of our recyclers are homeless; studies indicate that at least of 50% of the homeless are mentally ill. Over the past 10 years I've started seeing fat schizophrenics talking to themselves as they pick through the trash. When I see this, I know they're taking their olanzapine. It's an antipsychotic that has a side effect of obesity. However, your guy is clearly not homeless; not with that spotless white undershirt.

Salut Laurent,
excellent imagine of the real life in India.
I don't believe it's a hard imagine as it's just a glance of the life there, then in your note you explain it so well.

An interesting and well composed 'man at work' photograph, Laurent - a sort of cross between a daily life shot and a portrait shot. On the technical side, perhaps a very slight adjustment in curves or with the PS shadows/highlights tool could have brought out a little more detail in the shadows. Cheers . . . David
