Photographer's Note

Photographed at 12th century site near Vadnagar,Gujarat.

Kaal Vairava, with four out of ten hands missing.Top two hands hold a snake and the lower left hand the head of a bearded person.A knotted cloth hangs from his shoulder. Perhaps the sculptor had a fascination for knots - the snake also has a knot !

He stands on a buffalo's head - signifying his vanquishing Mahishasura - the Buffalo Demon. Siva vanquishing Gajasura is a known imagery - his vanquishing a Mahishasura is uncommon.

A Gana sits on the right hand corner.
