Photographer's Note

The last week I have shown a number of photos from the famous Meenakshi Temple in Madurai in southern India. But during my stay there in 1988 I naturally spent most of my time in the streets of the lively and colourful city. Today you will see three photos from those long walks.

This is the local temple elephant of the district where I was staying. It had spent the morning hours working on the temple ground collecting coins from visitors and blessing each one with a kiss on the forehead. Now it was off for lunch at my hotel, where it was served rice leftovers. One or two of you may have seen this photo I posted years ago:

Of course I gave it a coin and received a rather wet blessing.

Two ordinary street photos can be seen in the WS.

All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.
