The city of Mysore is most known of the festival of Dasara (also called Dussehra). When kings (wodeyars) used to rule Mysore, the festivities was unparalleled. It is still celebrated with great pomp today with the kings being principal participants. According to Hindu mythology the festival celebrates and commemorates the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari after slaying the demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. The Dasara festivities have become an integral part of the culture and life in Mysore.

During the festival (and also weekends :-)), Mysore palace is lit up by thousands of light bulbs that give it this unique look. The background in this picture shows the main dome of the palace, and the actual palace is much much larger.

Millions of people flock every year during this "Dasara season" to see and enjoy the festival, which also gives a lot of cultural insights. This particular picture was taken from palace grounds (a large area in front of the palace) when some people walk on the footpath. Both men in the frame are looking at the palace and admiring!
