Photographer's Note

The Prayer wheels are used by Tibetan Buddhists and it is believed that spinning it will have the same effect of orally reciting the payer 'Om Mani Padme Hum' which literally means 'jewel in the lotus'...

The Prayer wheels are usually filled with the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of great compassion - OM MANI PADME HUM.

In Ladakh it is quite common to see elderly people spinning the prayer wheel. The constitution of the wheel is very important as the prayer needs to be properly mentioned in a scroll inside the wheel, but it is more often sold as a tourist souvenir.

In this picture you can see that the woman has used two nuts as a weight to spin the wheel.
